A recent study by NGA Human Resources has revealed that almost half of candidates are deciding to turn down offers of employment because they were put off by problems during the recruitment process.  Most alarmingly, there was a concerning & condemning assessment of the interactions that Candidates were experiencing with the Company staff representatives such as hiring managers and HR contacts which made them think twice, amplifying doubt rather than commitment.

Other factors included;

  • 56% of candidates had a better offer from another business
  • 49% of candidates did not like the salary on offer
  • 44% said the role differed to that originally discussed
  • 33% declined due to lack of flexible working options
  • 29% declined due to the lack of good benefits
  • 27% thought they would not get along with new colleagues

It is clear that Candidates are increasingly holding the key power in recruitment and whilst of course it goes both ways, given that as soon as you read their CV you are making a judgement on them, but you have to consider, that as soon as they hear about your vacancy they begin making a judgement on you, looking at your profile, your website, looking at your sites on streetview etc, looking at the hours, salary, job description and checking out staff profiles on LinkedIn etc – we live in an increasingly connected and transparent world.

With uncertain times ahead and with counter offers continuing to proliferate, it is key to form a positive relationship in the early stages of a recruitment process. As intermediaries in the Recruitment process, we continually manage the damaging factors such as delays in interviews, lack of feedback, lack of proper documentation / job description and critically job offers that neither make a Candidate feel truly wanted & valuable, or indeed simply detailing all the relevant elements of the salary & package offered.  Business’ need to think carefully about their recruitment plans and their Employer brand to ensure they not only draw, but importantly, secure the key talent they need to build a strong, robust & effective Business.
